County v Stockport Metro 24th September 2017

This opening home fixture resulted in a win for Stockport Metro by 26 points to 14. Worcester’s shot score was 170 compared with 214 for Stockport.

Session  1

Session 1 saw both singles and both Pairs losing their matches. Johnathon Smith in his first Singles outing for the county was well placed at the end of the 12th end with scores level. Unfortunately his opposite number had the edge during the last three ends of the match to win what had been a very close match.

Session  2

Complete reversal for the fortunes of the county with wins in both the Triples and Fours. Overall the county teams scored 64 shots against 20 for Stockport with all team members contributing to this success. . Mark Bourne’s Triples team won 15-6,  Richard Rose’s team won 16-6  –  Richard Danks’ Fours team won 20-2 and Terry Clifford’s team won 13-6.

Session  3

The Singles and Pairs teams lost their matches with the only small consolation that the shot deficit was less than the morning session.

Session  4

Mark Bourne’s triples team had another convincing win with a strong performance throughout winning 22-8. Three shots off the penultimate end and four shots off the last end was a fine tribute to the team’s strength. The other Triples team lost together with both Fours teams.

County v Suffolk – 4th February 2017

This match against Suffolk was the preliminary round of the end of season inter county knockout series. The County lost by 12 points to 28, scoring 160 shots overall compared with 203 for Suffolk.

Session  1

Both Singles players lost their opening matches, but there was a win for Dave Grove/Alan Walters in their Pairs match – by 12 shots to 8

Session  2

Both Triples teams lost their matches, but there were strong performances from both Fours teams. Winning eight of the eleven ends in the match, Rad Danks’ team romped home easily by 21 shots to 4. Terry Clifford’s team were 5-6 down after the 8th end but went on to win the last three ends to have a comfortable 10-6 win.

Session  3

Jim Tingle was in fine form for his second match of the day  –  only losing three ends of his 15 end match. Jim ended up winning very comfortably 19-7. Both Pairs teams lost by narrow margins.

Session  4

Both Triples teams lost. Terry Clifford’s Fours team claimed their second win of the day. The team was level with their opponents 5-5 after the 6th end, but with 11 shots taken off the next three ends they comfortably ran out 16-9 winners. The second Fours team narrowly lost 8-10.

County v Gloucestershire 17th December 2016

This home fixture was the second leg of the 2016 competition for the “Two Shires Trophy”. Gloucestershire won by 24 points to 16, thus retaining the trophy for the second year. Gloucestershire scored 206 points to Worcestershire’s 166.

Session  1.

Both Singles bowlers lost their matches, although Richard Rose came storming back in the last end of his match, scoring 4 shots, only to be one shot short of his opponent’s final score.. There was a narrow defeat for Dave Grove and Richard Payne in their Pairs match, but Pete Forster and Johnathon Smith had a comfortable win 16-9, having won three of the last fours ends of the match.

Session  2.

Anthony Ruddy’s Triples team had a very slow start to their match and were soon down by 11 shots down after four ends. The team then scored 11 shots over the next nine ends, but with their opponents scoring four, they narrowly lost. In a hard fought and close match, with scores level at the beginning of the last end, Maureen Tingle’s triples team went on to win 13-11. Richard Danks’ Fours team had a very comfortable win 13-4.

Session  3.

Both Singles bowlers lost their afternoon matches together with one of the Pairs teams. Dave Grove and Richard Payne, however, started their Pairs match in fine form winning the first eight ends, going into the ninth end 11-0 in the lead. Their opponents fought back strongly but could not turn the match around after such a strong start by the Worcestershire Pairs team., with Dave and Richard eventually winning 13 shots to 9.

Session  4.

There were convincing wins for both Fours teams. Richard Danks’ team, having won the first five ends ( 10-0 ) went on to become 17-6 winners. Jim Tingle’s team were also comfortable winners, having won seven of the eleven ends, Their final score was 14-6. Both triples teams lost.

County v Gloucestershire – 27th November 2016

This was the last of the fixtures in the current series of inter county matches for this year ( but the County has another fixture against Gloucestershire on the 17th December competing for the “Two Shires Trophy”).

The County’s away match on the 27th was won by Gloucestershire by 28 points to 12. ( 157 shots for Worcestershire and 211 shots for Gloucestershire)..

The morning session was disappointing with both Singles bowlers and one pairs team losing, with the second Pairs team of Peter Forster and Johnathon Smith drawing. Both the Triples and Fours teams lost their matches during the morning session with the result that the County only scored one point overall.

The afternoon session saw a dramatic improvement with four wins and one draw from the eight matches played, with the County scoring 11 points for this session. Although both Singles bowlers lost their matches, Jenny Gibbs and Richard Payne won their Pairs match 14-11 and Peter Forster and Johnathon Smith drew their match 14-14. There were wins for Mark Bourne’s Triples team ( 13-10 ) and Maureen Tingle’s Team ( 10-8 ). Richard Hulbert’s Fours team won 10-8.

County v Herefordshire – 6th November 2016

The County recorded its first win of the season against Herefordshire in the home fixture on the 6th November. The final score was 22 points for Worcestershire and 18 for Herefordshire. The respective shots score was 187 to 172.

Session 1.

This was a good session for the County with Richard Rose leading throughout his Singles match to win by 12 shots to 10. Terry Clifford in his Singles match powered into the lead after the fifth end to win convincingly by 16 shots to 10. In Johnathon Smith’s Pairs match, scores were level 8-8 after eight ends, but thereafter the team had the edge finishing with a 14-12 victory. In the second Pairs match Pete Hopkins’ team were 6-18 down after nine ends,but then went on to win the next six ends in an excellent comeback only to lose narrowly by 15 shots to 18.

Session 2.

“Triples 1” could not find their form and lost their first match of the day 5-11, but “Triples 2”, Maureen Tingle’s team, started in devastating form being 8-0 up after the seventh end. They went on to win convincingly 12-5. “Fours 1” team lost their opening match, but “Fours 2”, Jim Tingle’s team, starting the last end one shot down won this last end by 2 shots to end up winning 9-8.

Session 3.

In a reversal of the first session both Singles players lost their matches. Johnathon Smith’s Pairs team secured their second win of the day by 13 shots to 7, having led throughout their match. The second pairs team unfortunately lost.

Session 4.

Their were wins for both Fours teams and one of the Triples teams in this session. Mark Bourne’s Triples team were 5-9 down after seven ends but went on to score 13 shots from the next five ends to win comfortably 18-10. Richard Hulbert’s Fours team were level 8-8 after 8 ends, but then went on to win the next three ends to finish wining comfortably 16-8. Jim Tingle’s Fours team led throughout their match and finished worthy winners 14-4.
